House Hunting in … Corsica

$3.6 MILLION (2,750,000 EUROS)

This granite palace tucked among hills near the Mediterranean Sea is roofed in red tile and has nearly 5,400 square feet of space. It was built in 1780 by a local nobleman in the heart of a village about 15 minutes’ drive from Ajaccio, the Corsican capital. Seven years ago, it was thoroughly restored by the current owner, who made use of salvaged materials like oak flooring and unpolished black slate, along with modern appliances.

The stone structure, fully air-conditioned and set on almost half an acre, now operates as a bed-and-breakfast inn called Carpe Diem Palazzu. It is equipped and functional; all furnishings are included in the asking price.

The World’s Most Expensive House

By Frances Perraudin

It’s set to be quite a housewarming.

India’s richest man, and Forbes’s fourth richest man, Mukesh Ambani, has built the world’s most expensive house in Mumbai. It is estimated to be worth $1 billion.

The lavish building– named Antilia, after the mythical island– has 27 stories, is 173 meters high and has 37,000 square meters of floor space — more than the Palace of Versailles. It contains a health club with a gym and dance studio, at least one swimming pool, a ballroom, guestrooms, a variety of lounges and a 50-seater cinema. There are three helicopter pads on the roof and a car park for 160 vehicles on the ground floors. It’s obviously quite a job keeping all this running smoothly, so the house, if you can call it that, also boasts a staff of 600. And all this for just Ambani, his wife and their three children to enjoy.

Experts are saying that there is no other private property of comparable size and prominence in the world, reports The Guardian. It has come as a surprise to some that Ambani, known as one of the more quite and down to earth of the world’s billionaires, would flash his immense wealth in such a public way, especially after India’s prime minister, Manmohan Singh, has called on business leaders to “eschew consumption” and “be role models of moderation.” – It’s very cool, but moderate this home is not.

$486 Million House Up For Sale in London

By Megan Gibson | @MeganJGibson

As the rest of Britain struggles through an economic downturn, London’s real estate market for the super-rich appears to be flourishing: a house with an asking price of £300 million — or about $486 million — is on the market for what’s believed to be the highest asking price of any home in Britain’s history.

The west London property, which borders Hyde Park, has apparently been for sale several months, although only a select few have been invited to bid on it. Hardly surprising, considering there’s only a handful of people in the world who could afford such an estate, which is going for more than double the price of Britain’s next most expensive home, the 300-year-old Park Place estate in Henley-on-Thames, which sold last year for $227 million.

Johnny Depp buys home for ex

When it comes to breakups and sharing the treasure, Johnny Depp is no pirate. According to the New York Daily News, the 49-year-old Depp has made real good on his good-guy image by purchasing a Hollywood Hills home for his former partner, Vanessa Paradis.

The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star has netted more than $300 million for his box-office-smashing film work, according to Curbed, so the $4.4 million sale price won’t put a dent in Depp’s stash. Still, the gesture goes a long way to preserving the peace between Depp and Paradis, 39, the mother of his two children, 13-year-old Lily-Rose and 9-year-old Jack.

The 5,800-square-foot home is nestled on a wooded lot of an Hollywood A-lister retreat off Mulholland Drive. Along with five bedrooms and five bathrooms, the Mediterranean spread earns its “wow” factor from the exposed wood beams, the masterful tile work and swimmer’s pool and spa.

Paradis and Depp were never married, and their relationship officially came to an end after they moved from France to Los Angeles last year.
